After releasing their fourth full-length, a self-titled album, last fall, Chastity Belt hit the Lodge Room on Wednesday night in the midst of their current West Coast tour. The quartet — comprised of Julia Shapiro (vocals, guitar), Annie Truscott (bass), Lydia Lund (guitar) and Gretchen Grimm (drums) — played a slew of their dreamy, emotional rock to a packed room. With moody lighting to fit the tone of Chastity Belt’s thoughtful lyrics and soothing sounds, the crowd was lulled into a sense of comfort through a setlist of tunes coming mostly from their latest album.
Los Angeles’ own indie-rock-jazzy quartet Total Heat were up before Chastity Belt, and as their name may suggest, they brought the heat. Between songs and while switching from guitar to drums, frontman Ross Wallace Chait pleaded to the crowd to vote on March 3, which brought cheers from the audience. Singer-songwriter Hugh F, who was born in the U.S. but hails from Melbourne, Australia, opened the show with his laid-back pop tunes performed solo. He was later joined by his cousin, also on guitar, to assist him on closing out his set. It was his first gig in L.A., and the early crowd welcomed him warmly.
