The Yves is the new musical project of Stevie Perry and Jake Randle, whose beguiling first single “Road Less Known” is an upbeat, nostalgia-flecked bop about trying to get ahead, hitting roadblocks and finally finding one’s path in life.
The pair, former members of the band Machineheart (RIP), got their heads together in 2019, penning 20-plus songs in Randle’s apartment that contemplate millennial challenges, media saturation and twentysomething ennui. “We didn’t have much of an end goal in mind — other than making music we liked and putting it out,” the duo says. “It’s been a very free-flow approach without rules of what it should, or shouldn’t be.”
If, as Perry sings, they aim to make something so that “mama can be proud,” the limber bass line and background “oohs” in “Road Less Known” are a good start. “Think I found the road less known / streets up here covered up in gold,” declares the chorus, which begs for a sing-along … if not the actual directions to that road.
