The venerable Earl Carroll Theatre in Hollywood is undergoing a restoration that will see the venue open in early 2021, with Nederlander Concerts handling the booking and promotion.
The theater, across the street from the Hollywood Palladium at 6230 Sunset Blvd., opened in 1938. It has gone through many incarnations since — most recently it was Nickelodeon’s TV production base — and with a capacity of 1,800 (about the size of the Wiltern), it figures to be a player as a concert venue.
Nederlander, which announced the booking agreement this week, said the theater would host concerts, comedy, family and other live entertainment, as well as special events. “Hollywood has and always will be important to the Nederlander family, and we look forward to expanding our footprint and bringing quality live entertainment back to this beautiful, historic venue,” said Alex Hodges, Nederlander’s CEO.
The multi-million-dollar restoration is the project of Thaddeus Hunter Smith, who helped the refurbishment and upgrade of the nearby Fonda Theatre 15 years ago, and investor/billboard impresario Brian Levian.
