Video: Blushh, ‘Too Dark’

Blushh started as the solo project of writer, photographer, promoter and L.A. scene stalwart Shab Ferdowsi, who began writing songs in 2015 on a lark. As her skills on the guitar have improved, so has Blushh’s crunchy, cherubic power-pop, which first revealed its exuberant choruses on the EPs “It’s Fine” (2017) and “Thx for Asking” (2018).

Today, Blushh — now a gang effort with bandmates Skyler Garn (lead guitar), Kenzo Cardenas (bass) and Arturs Reirs (drums) — announced the April 17 release of their debut album, “R.I.P. Apathy.” Co-produced by Yianni Anastos-Prastacos and the band, it’s a collection of catchy self-empowerment tunes from by a songwriter who calls herself a late bloomer and blames nobody but herself.

The Weezeresque single “Too Dark,” released today, has its roots during a time, Ferdowsi says, “I was stuck in my head.

“I had just moved back home to my parent’s house for the second time, 25 miles away from my social life. Because I don’t drive, I felt stuck physically and emotionally in all kinds of ways,” she explains. “I was 26, never really had a direction I was working towards, didn’t know what I wanted from life, and felt like I had just spent the past few years since college goofing around instead of working towards something real.

“After Blushh went on its first tour in the fall of 2018 though, everything flipped on its head. I had never felt more energized or sure about anything before. … I had something to work towards! Something to care about! Playing music that I wrote in my bedroom for people in different places, making connections and building community along the way.”

Director Caleb White’s video for the single adds a whole lot of color to “Too Dark.” Bop along while waiting for the smiley-faced piñata to be felled.
