L.A. punk quartet the Tissues make a simple but powerful statement about identity in the song “My Body My Mind,” one of the fiercest moments on their album “Blue Film,” released in January.
The quartet of Kristine Nevrose, Jerry Narrows, Bianca Ayala and Tara Edwards enlisted a diverse cast of Angelenos to drive home their message in the video for the song. The video debuted Tuesday, the final day of Women’s History Month, but as the band points out, “Our lives and our struggles cannot be encapsulated in a single month and shouldn’t be.”
The video, they write, is “about body autonomy, self-love and self-confidence … Not only to celebrate cis women, but anyone facing hardship or discrimination based on their gender, be they trans, non-binary, or non-conforming. … At a time when Texas is secretly banning abortions in coronavirus bills, trans people are struggling to safely get hormone treatments and artists and performers are losing their livelihood, method of self-expression, and often their means of managing their mental health and traumas, it’s more important than ever to support one another.”
Among those making an appearance in the video are punk legend Alice Bag, Drew Arriola Sands of Trap Girl and Transgress Fest, Peter Kalisch of Queerspace, Le’lani Lan’caster of Fucked Forever, Tromaville promoter Tiki Freaky and Grace X of the political punk act, Garbitch.
It’s a three-minute celebration of inclusiveness by a band giving a voice to those who feel like they’re stuck in the margins.
