Since they released their debut album “Build the Wall” in 2018, L.A. power trio the Absurd have been sharpening the knives, not to mention their tasty riffs.
Their politically charged fury was captured on last year’s live album, “Live From the Satellite,” as singer-guitarist Ben Foerg, bassist Josh Loney and drummer Colin Jensen set to work on a new full-length, originally planned for this summer (though things are in flux due to the current environment).
Today, they unveiled the new single “Whiskey & Razorwire (Get Over It),” the second single from that album, “The Sun Still Rises.” Here, the trio employs a prickly, circular riff and sonic thunder to rage against something other than political buffoonery — in this case, the bitter aftertaste of a relationship.
“It’s the story of being angry at yourself because you can’t accept that something is a foregone conclusion,” Foerg says. “In this case it’s a relationship I didn’t want to give up, and though I wanted desperately for it to work out, it became clear that it had to end over time. And it still took months beyond that to come to peace with the fact that it needed to end. And that peace only came with lots of whiskey, drugs and blaming the girl for putting me through misery.”
Foerg says the song represents the only “personal” moment on the otherwise outward-looking new album, most of which was recorded at Canyon Hut studios in Laurel Canyon, adjacent to the house Alice Cooper once owned.
The Absurd promise more concrete news on the album soon, but for now “Whiskey & Razorwire” serves as kind of a current status — because, says Foerg, “the angst and frustration of this song are fitting for the times.
