Supermoon is the new project from Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova) and Morgan Nagler (Whispertown), which arrives in time for tonight’s supermoon with the surprise release of the album “Half Country.”
The album title is an apt description of the music: burnished folk-cum-indie-rock with ambrosial duets that marry the sensibilities of the duo’s individual projects, Nagler’s bright vocals alongside Bellows’ woozy narration, and vice versa.
It’s not the first musical collaboration for the pair, of course. Bellows has been Nagler’s partner-in-tune as band member, producer and mixer in Whispertown, whose most recent album was 2017’s “I’m a Man.” And besides her work in Whispertown, Nagler has accumulated a host of co-writing credits over the years (including on Haim’s “Falling”).
Bellows’ Neva Dinova remains revered in his native Omaha, having released three albums, a split album with Bright Eyes, as well as the 2013 solo album “New Ocean” on Saddle Creek.
But, as they point out, Supermoon is first time the duo has collaborated from start to finish. And, they say, “In the surreal soup of the COVID-19 pandemic Wild West, [we’ve] decided to release the album April 7, 2020’s biggest Supermoon, (the Pink Supermoon) in the hopes of shining a little light in the dark.”
Nik Freitas produced and played on “Half Country,” which kicks off with “Come to Learn,” a nighttime confessional of true love. If you’re looking to shine a little light, it’s a good place to start.
