On the day they released their new album, the Buttertones check in for today’s edition of the Buzz Bands LA interview/artist playlist series QUARANTUNES. Hearing their album, you’ll want to get out — not a good idea, y’know — but their playlist will take you on a wild ride.
THE LATEST FROM THE BUTTERTONES
The Buttertones today released their fifth album, the croon-alicious “Jazzhound,” a collection that pushes their surf-cum-garage rock into new territory both topically and in song structure. Carried by Richard Araiza’s passionate baritone, it lives at once in the past and present, neither fawningly retro nor fastidiously tricked-out. In one verb, it motors. The road’s never straight, either, which makes it compelling from front to back.
HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?
Richard Araiza: I have been in New Mexico this last month with my family. I help them out with whatever they need — I spend time messing with my home studio set-up and on the weekends I go out riding in the desert. The other boys are still in L.A., jamming and building models.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?
Richard Araiza: Seeing friends and family, and definitely touring, hopefully later this year. Crossing our fingers.
ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?
Richard Araiza: Here are some tunes I’ve been listening to lately. Great for all moods of the day. Enjoy!
