It’s the supposition — the implied “but” — that’s the most important part of Hawk Percival and Friends’ new single “I Might Be Dead.”
The prickly retro-rocker, the first new music from L.A. singer-songwriter Autumn “Hawk” Percival and her band of collaborators since early 2019, offers a beacon of strength for anyone suffering bouts of depression.
“‘I Might be Dead’ is a song for those who feel dead inside but still want the most out of life,” Percival says, adding that the inspiration came from “the opening line in one of the verses in ‘Passion Play’ by Jethro Tull: ‘And so, I’m dead, the young man said.’ Death has been a theme for me throughout my life. I’ve learned to accept that we are very close, but it doesn’t mean my life has to be dark and sad.”
The song is from Hawk Percival and Friends’ forthcoming album “Well Dressed and Depressed: Part 1,” which sees the singer-songwriter again collaborating with Dylan Rodrigue. Bassist Marcus Hogsta and percussionist Evan Jiroudek also played on it.
