L.A. duo OYLS debuted their funky falsetto synth-pop two years ago with the viral single “Maps” and a debut EP that was like a lot of funky falsetto synth-pop — clean, dancey and fun.
The debut album, arriving in May, sets them apart, at least conceptually. “OYLS: For Your Consideration” is a nod to big business, and you’re liable to find both winking humor and some degree of truth in their idea. The duo — David Kirshenbaum (former corporate consultant) and Michael Lipp (a failed strip club DJ turned Hebrew school music teacher) — dedicates each song on the album to corporations. “See: themes of despair; conflicted feelings about technology, capitalism and materialism,” the add.
They introduced the album in February with “Visa (Paid for My Parking Ticket),” worthy of a chuckle until you consider its kernel of truth. “The inspiration behind the narrative came from our realization that some of our most fundamental relationships are with companies,” the duo says. “We often interact more with our card company than our old high school friends.”
The title of OYLS’ new single “Instagram (You Remind Me I’m Worthy)” speaks for itself. Apparently, Netflix, Pfizer and Comcast turn up on the album, too.
It’s all part, the duo says with tongues firmly in cheek, of their rebranding as a “profit conscious musical duo®.”
Can’t wait for the IPO.
