Ears Wide Open: Late Slip

Late Slip is musical vehicle for the rootsy stylings of singer-songwriter Chelsea Nenni, who debuted in 2016 with the EP “Other Men” and last year released two rollicking-n-rollers she made with producer Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, FIDLAR, Nikki Lane, Oberhofer, Guards, Happy Hollows, Valley Queen, among others).
Neither of the latter — “Dry These Tears” and “About to Break” — were short on moxie, but with her latest offering, Late Slips injects some witty humor (and a new collaborator) into the proceedings.
The new single “Strike,” which features vocals and guitar from Nick Waterhouse, suggests that dinner might not be the only thing simmering in the kitchen.
The song emerged from a session with Nenni, Pesacov and Waterhouse last fall at Pesacov’s Ahata Sound studio. “I had brought along an idea for a song that used old-school sayings that my New York Italian grandma used to use,” Nenni says. “My favorite one was, ‘You gotta strike while the iron is hot.’
“Since Nick, Lewis and I all share an affinity for all things retro, we rolled with that lyric and ended up finding this sexy kitchen vibe. Honestly, the lyrics were coming out so ridiculous (example: “The coffee’s percolatin’ in the pot / you better come on over if you need somethin’ hot”) that in the demo you can hear Nick and me cracking up while trying to sing what we’d just written. … It was a pretty magical little session. Then, in January, Nick was kind enough to come join Lewis and me in the studio to duet with me on ‘Strike’ and add some kickass guitar on that tune.”
So have a little of Late Slip’s heat. After all, she sings, “I keep all my counters clean.”
