Quarantunes: A playlist by Melody Federer

Where else are you going to find a playlist that catapults from The Foundations to Beyoncé, Chicago to Beirut, Frank Sinatra to Absofacto? Well, here’s Melody Federer, whose new album is simmering on the back burner as she talks about the hermit life in today’s edition of the Buzz Bands LA series QUARANTUNES.

THE LATEST FROM MELODY FEDERER

Texas native, world traveler and musical changeling Melody Federer turned heads in March with “This Town,” a smoldering anthem that has gotten attention at rock radio and is also the first taste of her forthcoming second album. It’s a departure from the folk poetry on her 2017 full-length “When the Dogwoods Bloom,” but Federer — who has written for the likes of P!nk, Hilary Duff, Plastik Funk, Kelly Rowland, Jacob Whitesides and Michael Bublé and in January teamed up with the legendary Burt Bacharach on the song “Bridges” — is not to be pigeonholed by either genre or era. Just see her playlist.

HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO MANAGE THE ‘STAY AT HOME’ EDICT?

I’m doing pretty good! Feeling blessed to have a roof over my head, be healthy and have family around. As a songwriter and artist I kind of waft between being a hermit writing or an artist performing anyways. This has been a much longer stint on the hermit side of things. In some weird ways, I like it.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO WHEN THIS IS OVER?

I wanna play live again. I wanna drive up to Seattle or get on a plane to Los Angeles or Nashville, rehearse with my band, write some new songs and play a show! I wanna go out to lunch with a girlfriend. I wanna grocery shop without a face mask. I hope this passes soon for everyone and we can all feel safe going out again.

ANYTHING WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS PLAYLIST?

These are some of my ultimate faves that keep me coming back, year after year.
