“Avenal,” the new single from Matt Costa, sounds like a meditation that came from middle of nowhere, where the passing of white lines on the highway send you into a hypnotic reverie. And it did.

The song materialized on a lonely stretch of I-5 in Central California on a morning Costa was on a road trip with his friend Chase Perkowski. “When we pulled over near Avenal it was early in the morning,” the 37-year-old Orange County-bred singer-songwriter says. “Chase my close friend was strumming a few chords as the gas was pumping, I sat under a tree humming a melody and frantically writing down lyrics. By the time the car was fully fueled, I asked him to play back the chords to me as I sang the song. I wondered what to call it, I looked at a road sign and it said Avenal. It reminded me of how Mississippi John Hurt was found in Avalon many moons ago and was rediscovered there.”

“Avenal” is the first single from Costa’s forthcoming album “Yellow Coat.” out on Sept. 11. Produced by Alex Newport, it’s his sixth full-length and second for L.A. label Dangerbird Records, following 2018’s “Santa Rosa Fangs.”
