Phoebe Bridgers’ new single “I See You” is breakup song co-written by the guy she broke up with. Which might sound thorny, but … let her explain:
“It’s about my breakup with my drummer,” she says. “We dated for a few years, made music every day, and were extremely codependent. We became like family to each other, so our breakup was extremely tough. But if this tells you anything about our relationship, we wrote this song together, just like everything else.”
The drummer in question is Marshall Vore, the songwriter who co-authored five songs on Bridgers’ debut album “Stranger in the Alps.” Vore, referenced in the album’s track “Smoke Signals,” is an Idaho native who many moons ago moved to Los Angeles as the drummer in the folk-rock band Olin & the Moon.
The song is the latest from Bridgers’ forthcoming sophomore album, “Punisher.” She adds that the tune was originally titled “ICU” but that the title has been changed. She explains the change thusly: “*Gestures at entire world*.”
In online news, Bridgers will kick off a “world tour” May 26 with a performance from her kitchen, followed by May 28 from her bathroom and June 4 from her bed.
