L.A. Witch were quarantining before the rest of us — the goth-psych-punk trio sequestered themselves in January and February, pre-pandemic, to work on new music. “As far as the creative process goes, this record is a result of sheer willingness to write,” vocalist-guitarist Sade Sanchez says. “When you sit down and make things happen, they will happen, rather than waiting to be inspired.”
The result of that intense focus is their sophomore album, “Play With Fire,” arriving Aug. 21 via Suicide Squeeze Records.
It’s been three years since the trio — Sanchez, bassist Irita Pai and drummer Ellie English — released their deliciously dark debut album and two since the follow-up EP, “Octubre.” Today, they announce the new record with the single “I Wanna Lose,” a galloping, slash-and-burn rocker that turns the idea of winning inside-out. “‘I Wanna Lose’ is about feeling free and feeling stronger because you’ve lost everything and now you’ve got everything to win,” Sanchez says. “It’s about being a punching bag in a martyr-like way, and losing a fight to move on.”
