Coming off a year during which her album “Overload” earned a Grammy nomination (and a year that ended in a “Smile”), Georgia Anne Muldrow returns this summer to her solo jazz project Jyoti for the first time since 2013.
Jyoti is a name bestowed upon Muldrow by the late Alice Coltrane, and Muldrow released two albums under that moniker early last decade. The new Jyoti album “Mama, You Can Bet!” will be out Aug. 28 via SomeOthaShip Connect and eOne.
On the new single “Orgone,” the singer-songwriter-producer proclaims “Maladjusted in this land/ the powers just/ just can’t end the plan” as she yearns for a time of unity.
“This is a song for all of us, in this transatlantic nightmare,” Muldrow says of the track. “And this is a song just to say ‘I know how you feel, and maybe you feel the way I feel,’ and maybe we can live in a place where being Black ain’t such a big deal, because it’s just normal. Because it’s a natural thing. It ain’t a result of … somebody else’s story on our lives. We’re just human beings that are looked upon with a little bit more … Je ne sais … plain, you know? Even though we’re not plain people, we’re much more than that. We’re beautiful people. We’re ugly people. We’re happy people. Sad people. Peaceful people. … we’re people just like everybody else.”
