Remi Wolf’s new EP “I’m Allergic to Dogs!,” released on Friday, is that bottle of happy pills you’ll need for the temporary high to replace all the fun you planned on having this summer.
The Bay Area native, USC music school grad and onetime American Idol contestant made her proper debut in 2019 with the EP, “You’re a Dog!,” an overwhelming mélange of electronics-driven ’80s pop and ’90s R&B. She has disdained labeling her music, saying in an interview that “everything is soup.”
“I’m Allergic to Dogs!,” then, is a much more refined and flavorful dish. Its five tracks (with three remixes and counting) are funky, irrepressibly catchy and bursting with Wolf’s outsized personality. Her witty lyrics about relationships, identity and about being “lit in line” will spawn more emojis than complete sentences, but they’re relatable. Her “Disco Man” has fiscal plans; “Woo” is a trip through candyland (especially if you watch Agusta Yr’s video, one of three done for the EP); and the lead track “Down the Line” is fun and female-first: “And girls will be girls / We play and we barter / And we wanna rule your world / And we wanna be your mother.”
In addition to the EP, April saw the 24-year-old collaborating on the song “Cheesin’,” which featured Cautious Clay, Still Woozy, Sophie Meiers, Claud, Melanie Faye and HXNS — with proceeds going to MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund.
On Thursday night, Wolf celebrated the release with a sold-out drive-in show in Chinatown (she’s also on the already-announced lineup for the Outside Lands festival in August 2021).
Wherever she performs, they ought to serve rainbow Sno-Cones.
