Saturday’s opening day, from 1 to 8 p.m., features an all-L.A. lineup of 34 artists, including Best Coast, Nick Waterhouse, Inara George, Jenny Lewis, Mondo Cozmo, Matt Costa, Mating Ritual, Moby, Milk Carton Kids, Saint Motel and more. The festival will benefit the National Independent Venue Association to assist music venues being decimated by the pandemic. [Full lineup on the flyer at the end of this post.]
THE GO-GO’S
The day before the new documentary “The Go-Go’s” premieres on Showtime, the legendary L.A. band will release a new single, their first new music 20 years. The song, out July 31, is titled “Club Zero.” Director Alison Ellwood’s film premieres at 9 p.m. Aug. 1.
FLYING LOTUS
Got something you’d like to say? FlyLo is inviting you to reimagine “Black Balloons,” from his album “Flamagra.” Just download the instrumental, create your own flow and submit it with the right hashtag. You could win prizes. Find the instructions here.
GREG DULLI
Greg Dulli, whose remarkable solo album “Random Desire” came out early this year, will live-stream a show from Gold-Diggers at 6 p.m. Aug. 1. A limited number of pay-per-view tickets are available here.
LOS LOBOS
The drive-in concert featuring Los Lobos and Mariachi El Bronx, which had been scheduled for July 4, has been postponed until Aug. 29 because of COVID-19 concerns. Some tickets still remain.
JENNY O.
Jenny O. “This is a revolution and we have to keep the momentum,” she said, referencing current events. “I want to get better at talking explicitly and effectively about [dismantling] white supremacy. I’ve been passionately dissecting my lens and privilege for many years yet I have found a near inability to speak about it. So I’m looking into THAT, reading, talking. Many of us have been socialized not to speak about anything. This is presently all I’m interested in.” She did release a new single “Psychedelic Love” this week.
OPEN MIKE EAGLE
L.A. rapper-producer-comedian Open Mike Eagle has launched a new podcast network, Stony Island Audio. In addition to his usual podcast “Secret Skin,” which returns for a second season, he launches a new one called “What Happened Was” with DJ Prince Paul. Also on the network is “Super Duty Tough Work” from underground hip-hop artist Blueprint. More info on his feed.
THAT DOG.
That Dog.’s “Totally Crushed Out” and “Retreat From the Sun” are being re-issued on vinyl on July 24 via Third Man Records.
ELLIOTT SMITH
Speaking of re-issues, “Elliott Smith: Expanded 25th Anniversary Edition” is coming out Aug. 28 via Kill Rock Stars. Besides the remastered LP, it includes previously unreleased live material — see “Big Decision” performed Portland in 1994 — housed in a coffee-table book by photographer JJ Gonson.
DANCE DTLA
Dance DTLA, the Music Center’s annual series, is going digital this year, with online lessons at 7 p.m. for nine Friday nights, starting July 10. The full schedule.
BANDCAMP
Yes, Friday is another special day on Bandcamp — the vendor is waiving its share of revenue in an effort to boost artists affected by the pandemic.
