“Get a Life” is the sixth single — and the title track to the forthcoming album — from Human Barbie, a collection of work that songwriter Chris Hackman calls a “snapshot of one person’s experience of confusion, sadness and resolve.”
And poignant snapshots they are — like the ones on photographic paper, Human Barbie’s are dog-eared, sepia-toned and rippled by the cracks of time. His personal inventory might run parallel to yours, melancholic at first blush but not without reason for hope.
“Get a Life” takes a hard view of underachievers. “And isn’t it easy to stay on top of the world when no one’s looking? / And isn’t it easy to sneak away when you’ve been left behind?,” he sings, the bite in those rhetorical questions softened by pedal steel from Alex Fink, who joined the frontman along with vocalists Angela Vicente Asato and Alex Pfender as well as drummer Matthew Brundrett in recording the song.
The video for the song, made by Justin Possenti, is from the “Life of Ed,” which is described as “a cinematic companion” to the album. It stars Ed Mattiuzzi (“Modern Love,” “Dollar King”).
