The Sound were a critically adored British post-punk band who never achieved the commercial rewards many thought they deserved. They rode the same wave of music that brought the world Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs and the Cure, releasing five albums before disbanding in 1988 as singer-songwriter-guitarist Adrian Borland experienced mental health issues.

After the Sound’s demise, Borland continued a solo career while battling those problems, but eventually committed suicide on April 26, 1999. He suffered from schizoaffective disorder and severe depression.

Now a 16-track charity compilation, “Do You Feel That Way Too? A Tribute to The Sound,” released by L.A. label Dune Altar, honors the band’s legacy. Proceeds benefit the L.A.-based Painted Brain, a nonprofit helping empaths, artists and techies living with mental health issues. In addition, a raffle for two Fender guitars staged by the label will benefit the charity.

L.A. artists Collapsing Scenery, Brass Box and THIEF join a host of others– including Canadian quartet ACTORS, Sacramento quartet Creux Lies, the Bay Area’s Topographies and Sweden’s INVSN– on the compilation, sure to become a “Nugget” for fans of the genre. Salo takes on the Sound’s arguably best song “Heartland” (“Winning” doesn’t show up on the compilation), and Brass Box frontwoman Ammo Bankoff makes her solo debut, contributing “Total Recall” under the artist moniker AMMO.
