Ears Wide Open: Zachary Kibbee

In his solo work — an album, two EPs a host of singles since 2014 — singer-songwriter Zachary Kibbee cultivates a familiar, bluesy sound, rugged enough for your local bar but not quite gritty enough to start a brawl. It’s an aesthetic that has served him well in years of synching his songs for film, television and commercials.
On Friday, Kibbee releases his second full-length, “Life in Low Fidelity.” It’s the follow-up to 2016’s “Songs From the Mud.” Earlier this month, he teased the record by releasing the split single “Somewhere to Put My Gold” / “Come Back” to Bandcamp (bonus points for the bonus track with guest Jessica Childress).
“Low Fidelity” isn’t really lo-fi, but Kibbee mixes things up (while staying in his own lane, as the riffy “Burn It Down” shows) throughout the album. The highlight might be the bite-sized, gospel-inspired nugget “Love Is for Everyone,” an inspirational hand-clapper of a heartbeat and throbbing guitar. Danny Herb directs the video for the song, which was made in collaboration with Tom Rhodes.
