Every day of 2020 feels like the end of the world as (we think) we know it, but calamities aside, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a “Laugh.” Especially if Grandma is involved.

“Laugh.” is the title of the Gooms’ debut album, whose release has been pushed back to Sept. 4. As the Los Angeles quartet has said, the title is a directive to “be happy and smile and feel good in a time where it’s hard to do so.”

The band — lead singer-guitarist Chase Buttons, guitarist-vocalist Nicole Rae, bassist Ryan Meagher and drummer Shane Lawrence — has an absurdist streak longer than the line at the COVID-19 testing facility. And with each tease from the Gooms’ album, a frisky blend of pop-punk and surf-rock, you merely smile and nod your head in approval. Maybe these people have the end times wired.

At least Grandma Goom does. She’s the star of the band’s new video for “Ska Ska Blah Blah,” about which the band warns, “Sometimes titles are nonsense.”

The leading lady (Rae’s grandmother) has a lot of attitude and a lengthy to-do list. Follow along.

As for the song, “‘Ska Ska Blah Blah’ is about an unwillingness to recognize change and an attempt to escape reality,” the band says. “The quick and driving pace of the song is meant to resemble the feeling of being chased by an unknown force, slowly creeping closer with each passing moment until it ultimately swallows you whole.”
