Almost six months (and a COVID-19 lockdown) after busting loose with the smoldering alt-rocker “This Town,” singer-songwriter Melody Federer is sounding more like her Texas roots on the new single “The Wonder Years.”
Federer, who has made her mark as a songwriter for artists such P!nk, Hilary Duff, Plastik Funk, Kelly Rowland, Jacob Whitesides and Michael Bublé (not to mention her collaboration with Burt Bacharach), plays Americana siren on the twangy new song, a Jenny Lewis-styled musing on what goes unsaid in a relationship.
“This song is about the ‘wondering’ in a relationship,” Federer told mxdwn.com, where the song premiered. “You’re wondering if they’re still in love with you. You’re wondering what the future holds. It’s the wondering that starts when the initial dreamlike high is over and the two of you are walking that tightrope between the beginning of a love when everything is dreamlike and perfect and secure and the relationship’s unknown future. The rope’s starting to shake and you’re wondering if you’re gonna fall or make it to the other side. And if you fall, you’re wondering if that person is gonna reach out and grab you? It’s also about the nostalgia for the beginning of the relationship and the deep yearning to get that feeling of connection back. Change is natural. But we all seem to want the high to last forever, myself included. This song, for me, is about wondering if you’re gonna be able to survive the changing landscape of your partnership.”
Like “This Town,” “The Wonder Years” was produced by Thomas Doeve and mixed by TJ Elias.
