L.A. trio Moontower earned bona fides earlier this year for their collaboration with Goldroom on the irresistible “Guess I’m Jaded.”
Today the band — comprised of Baltimore native Devan Welsh and St. Louisans Jacob Berger and Tom Carpenter, all of whom got together at USC — release a new EP with the pandemic-appropriate title “What Day Is It?” Since Moontower debuted in 2018, they’ve played squarely to pop-obsessed tastes, ticking off all the boxes (hooks, well-scrubbed production, easy-schmeezy lyrics and choruses) that get young artists on Spotify playlists, only to be replaced by the next flavor of the month.
The four songs on “What Day Is It?” show more depth (and edge), notably “Hit the Lights.” It’s a dance-rocker that recalls the poppier bands of the post-post-punk era. Stomp your feet accordingly; that way, you’ll feel like you earned its rewarding chorus.
