Ears Wide Open: Shaggy Palms

Shaggy Palms represent the mind-melding of two boyhood pals from the Boston area: writer, musician and world traveler Dave Vierling and L.A. transplant Neil Popkin (War Tapes, Dreamland, Brass Box). The story goes that after Vierling spent some time overseas teaching English as a second language, he sought out Popkin to flesh out some demos. A cross-country trip to Popkin’s home studio in Southern California later, Shaggy Palms was born.
Their first single, out this week, is “Holy Plan,” a spacey, simmering jam that bobs along on a funky bass line. It suggests a moody night at Shaggy Palms’ disco, where everybody keeps to the shadows, making plans.
