Ears Wide Open: Westerner

Westerner are an L.A.. four-piece who dip their toes into psychedelic rock, old-school boogie, funk-rock, disco and even trip-hop, though not any of those at the same time. They’ve released a slew of hit-and-miss singles so far in 2020, but today they leap out of the pond with their strongest one yet, “Frog.”
Built on a scratchy riff, the slow-burning “Frog” oozes imagination, and, yes, it croaks. Even better, “Frog” rhymes with “dog,” a friend who turns up in the song to guard the house.
The band started several years back after frontman Cooper Bombadil wrote and recorded the album “Unreal City” and put together a band to perform it. He’s joined on the new songs by bassist Brandon Valerino, drummer Mike Gattshall and guitarist Javier Olmedo (who departed the band earlier this month).
