Louisiana-raised, Los Angeles-based R&B artist Davy Boi knows how to make the onset of a panic attack sound sound like no big deal. In the summer release “Do Myself Better,” he sings, “I’m failing, I’m fumbling things. My friends say I just need to breathe. I’m spiraling down.” Because of his smooth, relaxed delivery, it’s easy to journey alongside Davy’s all-consuming anxiety.
“‘Do Myself Better’ is a pledge to take self-care more seriously,” he says. “It’s about looking at imposter syndrome in the face and confronting daily anxiety in a tongue-and-cheek manner.”
The July single was Davy’s first release in over a year. Born David Mikael, he debuted with the EP “Errything So Far,” which included the standout, groovy “Dirty Mind,” featuring Queens rapper Dai Burger. The EP, like “Do Myself Better,” is an exploration of identity. Davy uses his music to explore who he is: a gay, albino Black man.
This mission is furthered by his podcast, also named “Do Myself Better.” Most episodes feature discussions with other queer talents about maintaining self-care during a pandemic. You can also listen to the “Live From Somebody’s Backyard in Pasadena” version, out today.
