Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Lukas Frank has kept heady musical company for years, while scarcely putting his own music out in the world. The (very) notable exception was the stunning solo EP he released in 2017 titled “Storefront Church.” After that, Frank adopted Storefront Church as the name of his project.
Today, Storefront Church releases a fully orchestrated new single, “The Gift,” in advance of its being featured in Friday’s premiere of the new Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit.” Like the EP, it’s expansive, brooding and cinematic. And it is perhaps a taste of what’s in store for Storefront Church’s debut album, “As We Pass.”
Almost a year ago, L.A. label and management company Sargent House announced that Storefront Church had joined its roster. Its stated plans to release the album this year have obviously changed, as today’s announcement of “The Gift” sets an early 2021 release. No matter when it arrives, the artist who began his career as a teenager as a drummer (for artists such as Portugal. The Man, Kitten, Alexandra Savior, Phoebe Bridgers, Hands, Black English and Decorator) will command your attention.
