Today, Kit Major releases the video for her single “Mind,” featuring Muppets who help the singer-songwriter as she ponders about how to open up about anxiety and depression in a relationship.
“It’s very fun and colorful, in both costumes and Muppet friends, but there’s also a self-reflective aspect to it,” she says of the video, another of her collaborations with Noël Dombroski. “The use of Muppets is also my brain: How I see people and how I feel they see me.”
The Chicago-reared, L.A.-based artist first arrived on the scene with the infectious “Strawberry Milkshake.” An evident Lady Gaga disciple, Major’s slew of releases since then prove her experimental and theatrical nature. Last year’s club-appropriate “Wild Side” and “Pray 2 Pop” affirmed her ability to hold ground in the hyperpop crowd. “Mind” is far more earnest and colored by indie sweetness. Though Major begins the video on the verge of a breakdown, clad in a tangerine suit at the breakfast table, she emerges by the end as a true pop star in a head-to-toe glitter suit.
“I’m going out of my M.I.N.D. hoping you’ll forgive me,” she sings in the chorus. “I don’t think you’re going to this time. ’Cause I am out of my mind.”
Proving her mastery of pop culture (a habitual performance trope, like in her Oct.. 23 Fairyworld virtual show), the video for “Mind” was inspired by Prince’s “Starfish and Coffee” Muppets performance. In addition to The Purple One, Major draws inspiration from David Bowie and David Lee Roth, aiming to make music for those in need of a friend.
