Ears Wide Open: Spacette

Spacette is the made-during-the-pandemic project begun by L.A.-based St. Louisan Jordan Heimburger. In March, the veteran sideman (and head honcho at the School of Rock Tustin) cast his songwriting gaze upon the increasingly fractious, fractured outside world and, inspired by dystopian sci-fi movies and books, got to work.

Ann Louise Thaiss, Heather Rivas and Doug Organ came on board to record the five songs on Spacette’s debut EP, which releases on Dec. 11, with Kevin Bowers, Tony Barbata, John Pessoni, Ben Reece and Bryan Hoskins adding parts remotely.

The first single is “City of Gold,” which will sound like solid gold to fans of David Bowie. Imagine if the Thin White Duke had spent some golden years just doing weed, early disco and California country. “‘City of Gold’ is the first song we started on and it’s a sort of center of gravity for the sound of the EP,” Heimburger says. “The hybrid disco beat meets Toto-ish shuffle was a fun discovery with Tony (drummer Barbata) and Heather slaying the synth solo — actually two killer solos interwoven.”
