Fun has not had a very good 2020, but the new Los Angeles trio Sandy Hawkins is here to end the year on a light note.

The made-in-pandemic project consists of Tom Banks, Keenan Brand and Tiger Smith, who say the band “was born out of quarantine boredom, mescal and a mutual love for the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Our various influences come together in hopes of ushering in a new era of yacht rock jams and smooth rap grooves to a new generation.”

Their early singles are a smart bricolage of styles, all coming at you with a wink and a smile — some begging the question: What if the Beastie Boys were the musical entertainment on The Love Boat?

So here’s the video for “Cherry Chapstick,” whimsically directed by Black Coffee (that’s Josh Rimmey and Zach Williams), with the trio partying like it’s 1979, 1989 and 1999. Streets, rooftops, parking lots, swimming pools, liquor stores — Sandy Hawkins are everywhere, with style. Thanks for this one thing, quarantine.
