Ears Wide Open: Dark Side of Light

From the moment Dark Side of Light’s single, “Moist” takes off, you can’t help but immediately nod your head along to the beat and fuzzy bassline.
It’s the first original single from the Los Angeles duo of singer-songwriter Nik Frost and producer Grant Conway, once the drummer-vocalist for ’90s L.A. band Silver Jet. The project began earlier this year and started as distraction for the two.
“We didn’t want to be a traditional band,” Frost says, “so we started writing from the genesis of beats and rhythm tracks that we thought were cool.”
Influenced by trip-hop and downtempo club music, Conway’s drums take center stage in “Moist,” while Frost’s falsetto vocal melodies and the overdriven bass dance around the beat. The contrast between the vocals and rhythm create an industrial, heavy sound that hits hard.
“Moist” comes after the duo’s reverential cover of Seals & Crofts’ classic tune, “Summer Breeze.” The cover was released with a music video that was directed by Eden Tyler and was shot in various locations across Los Angeles.
Dark Side of Light’s self-titled EP is expected soon.
