As if carried by the onshore breeze in his native Santa Barbara, singer-songwriter Ruben Zarate — aka Dante Elephante — has drifted away from his roots as a surf music-inspired indie-rocker and joined the crooning masses making synth-drenched R&B and disco lite. As if that group needed another member.

Nevertheless, here we are, in the passenger seat as Zarate drives through the desert, bopping along to “Las Vegas.” The song is the latest single from Dante Elephante’s fourth album, “Mid-Century Modern Romance,” which is coming out Jan. 8 via Philadelphia’s Born Losers Records. Produced by Paul Cherry, the album is the follow-up to 2018’s “Rare Attractions.”

“Las Vegas holds a special place in my heart,” Zarate says of the Jack Campise-directed video. “Living in Santa Barbara, the idea of driving five hours to Las Vegas was a no-brainer. So we went every weekend. Of course, during a pandemic made it 10 times more difficult, and I learned Vegas is a crazy place.”

“Las Vegas” follows the release of album singles “E-Motion,” “90 Days” and “Jeni,” all variations on same theme: 1979 is now.

For the past year, Dante Elephante has been busy as a podcaster, too. Check out the archives.
