If the magic of youth, especially as seen in the rear-view mirror, can be captured in swirling soundscape, Adult Bodies’ new single “Forever Young” does the trick.
It’s the first single of 2020 and the fifth overall from Adult Bodies, the solo project of singer-songwriter and producer Steven Wilkin. He once was the frontman of L.A. bands Sun Drugs and Vanaprasta, who not only released notable music over the past decade but whose members have gone on to make more: Wilkin with Adult Bodies; Collin Desha with his solo project Low Hum; Taylor Brown with his project Slip; and Cameron Dmytryk as part of the trio Facial.
Wilkin creates his cinematic electronic pop in his home studio full of vintage and modern synthesizers. Released independently, “Forever Young” emerged from a writing session with Joaquin Pastor of James Supercave, with Phillip Yancey of Coyote Mustache playing bass and Caleb Austin of Ghostribe contributing some additional production. Inspired by artists such as Weval, Zola Blood, Ben Khan and Klangstof, Adult Bodies’ latest figures to resonate with fans of pop stylists like Sohn and James Blake.
With its references to innocent things like the touching of hands to the earnest assurance to “be there for you,” the song, Wilkin says, explores “how you truly begin to understand yourself … [and] understand someone else. When you decide to let go and appreciate what is there, then love is reality.”
Sometimes all it takes is remembering how it all felt when it was new.
In the new year, Adult Bodies is plotting the release of another new single and an EP.
