Night Beats have been dispensing soulful, psychedelic garage-rock for over a decade, and with founding member Danny Lee Blackwell (born Danny Billingsley) having taken up residence in L.A. early this year, work has begun on their fifth album.
The organ-drenched “That’s All You Got” (b/w “Never Look Back”) is their first release for the London-based label Fuzz Club. Released Friday and available on 7-inch vinyl, the songs feature Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
The two bands go way back — Night Beats have opened for BRMC, and their 2016 “Who Sold My Generation” was produced by Nic Jodoin with Been playing bass. Night Beats’ latest full-length, 2019’s “Myth of a Man,” was produced by Dan Auerbach, and later in the year Night Beats released a cover of garage-rock progenitors the Sonics’ 1966 album “Boom.”
“Times like these make it seem like the world is tryna keep you down,” Blackwell says. “We’ll always have corrupt politicians and two-faced crooks trying to control our minds, but there are two things that are also eternal in this world: rhythm and blues. ‘That’s All You Got’ is a reminder that at the end of the day, we’ll always have the soul.”
