Stream: Misty Mtn, ‘These Lights’

Misty Mtn’s new single “These Lights” name-checks Christmas, but it’s not really a holiday song.

The synth-pop duo of Lucas Segall and Morissa Trunzo, who are currently riding out the pandemic in Trunzo’s native Montana and working on new music, capture that you-can’t-go-home-again melancholy, a smothering nostalgia that often hits hard during the holiday season. The emotional vibe is like the Dan Fogelberg chestnut “Same Old Lang Syne,” a song that just turned 40 years old.*

Misty Mtn frame the song thusly: “‘These Lights’ is that moment of beyond your better judgment going to your childhood home that’s no longer yours, looking up your ex on Instagram, seeing who got the job over you — allowing yourself to get lost in the memories but dance among the pain.”

While glossy and sweet, “These Lights” doesn’t drown in its own syrup. In the video, Trunzo visits the old school for a little of that dancing.
