Five years and three times zones later, Coma Girls, the folk/psych-rock project of Atlanta native Chris Spino, have announced their next major release.

Spino could hardly have delivered the news in a more audacious fashion: “Skyboxer,” the title track of Coma Girls’ new EP (arriving Jan. 29), is a beast, with stormy guitars carving out a landscape for his angsty vocals, reminiscent of Conor Oberst.

The singer-songwriter has obviously come a ways since the “Coma Girls” self-titled album in 2015 and his arrival in L.A. with little more than a backpack of clothes and a guitar. On the new EP, he is backed by drummer Travis Popichak, bassist Marvin Figueroa, keyboardist Dan Gee, guitarist Adam Laidlaw, backing vocalist Michika Skyy and pedal steel player Connor “Catfish” Gallaher. Tomas Dolas (Oh Sees, SASAMI, Mr. Elevator and the Brain Hotel) produced, engineered and mixed.
