The New Year is a time to revisit resolutions, goals, dreams and aspirations. Vocalist Adryon de León has done just that with her new single, “Ally,” a song that acts as a call to arms for fighting the good fight.
Inspired by the death of George Floyd, “Ally” is a track about rising up to the racial injustice in the world. It’s the first solo single for de León, an Ojai native who for the past seven-plus years has been the lead vocalist for the L.A.-based soul/funk group Orgone and has sung background vocals for the likes of Lady Gaga, George Clinton and Macy Gray.
“The producers of this track — Max MacVeety and David Tam — invited me into the studio after months of quarantine,” de León says. “We got to chatting about civil and racial unrest, and David sat down to the Rhodes and started looping a Stevie Wonder-type phrase. Max sat down to the drums to lay down a march of sorts …. a call to arms … and that was that.” She adds, “I hope the tune serves as a reminder that the fight for justice is not over; in fact, this iteration has just begun. Everyone can be an ally to the disenfranchised, vulnerable and overlooked.”
Bursting with horns, organ and background vocals, “Ally” is a funky rallying cry.
