Last March, Liz Phair announced that 2021 would bring the release of “Soberish,” her first album in more than a decade.

Today, the singer-songwriter arrives with a taste in the form of a new single, “Hey Lou” … plus, puppets.

The song, like her 2019 single “Good Side” produced by longtime collaborator Brad Wood (mastered by Emily Lazar of Lodge Mastering, assisted by Chris Allgood), is an ode to the romance of Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.

“Have you ever wondered what love looks like for your favorite celebrity couple behind closed doors?” Phair says. “‘Hey Lou’ imagines a day in the life of two music legends, whose union was an inspiration for rock bands and a source of curiosity for diehard romantics.”

Props to the people behind the Reed/Anderson puppets in the video, directed by Toben Seymour using puppets designed and built by Seymour. The costumes were designed by Michele Dunn, Lauren Barnett and Alison Mork, and Seymour and Christine Papalexis were responsible for the puppetry.

Easily as fun as Phair’s nifty lyrics.

On March 3, Phair and Wood will perform songs from the new album and her catalog, and will discuss her work, in a livestreamed concert titled “Hey Lou Hey Liz.” Tickets will be available here.

Also still on the calendar, for now, Phair’s concert supporting Alanis Morissette and Garbage at the Hollywood Bowl.
