Tropa Magica, the dispensers of psychedelic cumbia punk headed up by brothers David and Rene Pacheco, are currently far apart.

David is living in Albuquerque, N.M., from which he released music last year under the name Churro Triste. Rene is back home, answering David’s messages. They did get together recently to film a performance of their scorcher “Chalino Y Sus 7 Balazos,” from last year’s album “Tripiando al Infinito en Mi Recámara,” for a beer company. But mostly it’s been sibling revelry, from 780 miles (give or take) away.

“Sonora Distance,” released Friday, is the “first single we recorded remotely during the pandemic via emails and telegrams,” the duo says. Sung in Spanish, it’s a throwback to the music that first influenced them, and much of their early music when they were known as Thee Commons. Nostalgia? Sure, and always bring that beautiful accordion when you’re coming to the old school.
