Folk singer Will Munroe introduced his Kid Lightning persona last summer by releasing the single “End of the Empire,” taking up the mantle of sociopolitical commentator in the tradition of protest singers.

Kid Lightning’s third single “Special,” out this week, is yet another topical song, this one tackling the hot-potato idea of American exceptionalism.

“‘Special’ is a song all about the unearned mantra that’s defined our times: ‘I am special,’” Munroe says.

The songwriter maintains “the wealth of the world / is found in loving the meek,” although you’d never know it in this “era of The Taker.” In the end, Kid Lightning sings, “I’m trying to get right with something / bigger than myself.”

The song was co-produced and engineered by Brenda Carsey, who also sings backing vocals. Kid Lightning plans to release a full-length in April.
