Freddy Tyler Paul is a singer-songwriter, producer and photographer who migrated west from the Chicago area after the demise of the indie band he fronted, Ember Oceans. From the studio in his small L.A. apartment, he has picked up work on his solo debut album, “Missed Connections.”
He introduced the album early this year with the singles “Move On” and “Running on Fumes,” finding an aesthetic that melds modern synth-rock with the arena aspirations of ’70s pop. His theatrical croon is on full display in the third single and album closer, “I’ll Be Your Caffeine,” a schmaltzy outpouring of the heart (“I will be whatever you need me to be,” he confides) that might get a call-back if you left it as a voice memo for the sweetheart you left behind in the Midwest.
“In all my songs, I try to make explosive endings,” says the songwriter (full name, Freddy Tyler Paul Purcell). “The final climax to leave you wanting more. This track is my personal favorite, and I think it’s a perfect fit to close out the album. The lyrics are sexy and romantic. The synths are sexy and phat. What else do you need?”
Well, how about a video, directed by Paul along with Reed Ellefeson? Here, find your suburban Chicago lad, heartache on full display, traversing the streets and enjoying the vistas of Los Angeles.
“Missed Connections,” featuring 10 tracks that Paul played, recorded and produced himself, is due out later this year.
