Trip Carter is an L.A.-bred, USC-educated singer-songwriter, producer and bassist who has worked with artists such as Alina Baraz, Sabrina Claudio and Felly and has been cultivating his own brand of hip-hop and jazzy soul.
In 2018 he came on strong, releasing the full-length “Mirage,” and since then he’s dropped a series of style-shifting singles, including “Heavyweight” and “Ovation” this year.
The smooth, swaying “Heavyweight,” the cornerstone of a soon-to-arrive EP, is like a warm embrace from somebody who helped you through the past year. “I wrote this song in the midst of pandemic madness,” Carter says. “Quarantine seemed like it was gonna go on forever, and it was starting to weigh heavily on my mental state. I truly would’ve gone crazy if it weren’t for my loved ones holding me down. ‘Heavyweight’ is about just that. It’s an homage to the ride-or-dies, whether that be your significant other, your best friend, or your family. They ride with you, they die with you, and they help you bear the weight of your problems when you can’t do it on your own. That’s love.”.
