Bedroom R&B crooner Michael Seyer put himself on the map by releasing DIY albums in 2016 and ’18, followed by the “Nostalgia” EP in 2019, which heralded his performance at that year’s Tropicalia Festival.
The Filipino-American singer-songwriter, who was reared in Gardena, returns this week with his first single since that EP … and grab a Kleenex: “Miss My Baby” is a synth-drenched ode to his beloved pet, a song that tries its best not to be mawkish but, considering the subject matter, can’t help itself.
“‘Miss My Baby’ is a song for my dog, Baby, who passed away last March,” he says. “I tried writing a few songs about her because she was my best friend, but nothing came out. The songs were sappy and just did not feel right. So I tried writing something more subversive/disorienting compared to your traditional puppy song. What I got was something that got my perspective across about most relationships: It almost always ends but that does not discredit the experience; I will always miss and cherish the time I had with my best friend.”
