■ The Linda Lindas kicked off Los Angeles Public Library’s Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month (online) concerts series earlier this month, playing a ‘Kill’er set (donning shirts from Kathleen Hanna’s charitable clothing line Tees4Togo) live from the Cypress Park Branch. The L.A.-based, mixed Asian-Latinx American teen punk band– all sharing vocal duties– consists of 11th grader Bela and 8th grader Lucia on guitars, 7th grader Eloise on bass and guitar, and 5th grader Mila (aka Mimi) on drums. They’re a tightnit family unit, Lucia and Mila being producer Carlos de la Garza’s daughters, Eloise a niece and Bela a close friend. They had their first taste playing live on an indie punk stage while backing up Kristin Kontrol for the GIRLSCHOOL festival in 2018. The rest, as they say, is history, with one of their pre-lockdown pinnacles being openers for one of Bikini Kill’s reunion shows at the Hollywood Palladium.
The quartet stayed busy last year during lockdown, releasing the theme song for the Netflix documentary “The Claudia Kishi Club,” rocking two covers (Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl” and the Muffs’ “Big Mouth”) on Amy Poehler’s Netflix feature film “Moxie,” and pushing out a video encouraging all to “VOTE!” in the elections (with many special guest appearances) before capping off the year with the release of their self-titled debut EP. Now, after some buzz earlier this week, they’ve gone extra viral with Epitaph’s re-release of a clip from their library set, and officially releasing “Racist, Sexist Boy” as a single on Friday.
■ Also this week, No-No Boy (fronted by Julian Saporiti, formerly of the Young Republic, with Emilia Halvorsen) made an appearance on Live on KEXP at Home, where he spoke to DJ Morgan about the inspirations behind his new album, “1975,” and coming back around to making music after studying for his PhD in American Studies and stumbling upon painful chapters of Asian American history in Wyoming. It led him to further mine the depths of his Vietnamese side through his mother and uncover the musical heritage lost in the Vietnam and Cambodian Wars, as well as visiting our current day border refugee centers. The musical duo perform the tracks “St. Denis or Bangkok, From a Hotel Balcony,” “Khmerica,” “Hapa Book Club: In Praise of Japanese Breakfast, Nina & Luling” and “Little Saigon” from the album, as well as a very poignant acoustic cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In the USA.”
Also catch the album’s accompanying film, “Hold Me Lover, Tell Me Lies,” released via the 2021 Carnegie Hall Voices of Hope Festival as well as his recent article for Earthquaker Devices around his song “Hapa Book Club,” with an annotated playlist of other recommended Asian American musicians in the indie-alternative world.
