Ears Wide Open: Pacer

Los Angeles duo Pacer, Eric Poretsky and Jakob Shaw, began their musical journey as college classmates in Connecticut with a common love for modern classical, Americana and the kaleidoscopic 2010 indie scene.
Their wistful debut single “Polaroid,” the lead track from their upcoming EP, “The Terror of Other People,” captures the moment they bottled the melodic and lyrical sound that became the fulcrum for their future songwriting. It’s folk-infused, poetic California roots indie rock. A bit of sunshine and a bit of rain from the opposite coasts from which they came. “We recorded a few different demos over the last few years,” they reveal. “A hi-fi demo with a modern, synth-heavy arrangement, and another a lo-fi version recorded on a Tascam Portastudio. By taking different approaches to the same song, we ended up finding a sound that felt uniquely ours which would go on to set the tone for the whole EP.”
Their new single, “Waiting For The Punch,” gets deeper in the contemplative hit to the gut. “[It’s] a song about dealing with loss before it actually happens,” they explain. “It’s about hope, memory, regret and how we all try to make sense of things that are impossible for us to understand. I heard a musician being interviewed say that sometimes, songwriting allows you to access wisdom and clarity that would otherwise take you years to achieve on your own. On a personal level, that’s definitely true of this song as putting it together helped us through some very dark, difficult times.”
The EP was written, recorded and mixed by the duo throughout 2019 and 2020 with the help of friends Pat Kelly on bass, Sam KS on drums, Rich Hinman on pedal steel, a triple brass section with Lucas Frizzante, David Fisher and Joanna Steinberg and Guiseppe Monapiezo on bass clarinet, mastered by Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering.
“The Terror of Other People” releases on June 18.
