Video: Between Friends, ‘OK’

Florida-born siblings Savannah and Brandon Hudson make production-driven music under the name Between Friends, fashioning songs that are mere eddies in an ocean of synth-pop but occasionally hitting on something that catches you up in the swirl.
They call their albums and EPs “projects” and might be Exhibit A for clicking next on artists who lowercase all their titles. That said, “OK” (and its Jacob Epstein-directed video) has a big heart that transcends its preening production and overprocessed vocals.
The song is from their new album — er, mixtape/project — “I Like When You Shine!,” released last Friday.
“‘OK’ was the last thing we shot for the mixtape and we knew we had to end this cycle with a video of our friends,” the L.A.-based duo says. “We spent this past year tucked away inside working on the project. It felt so freeing and climactic to conclude in a mosh pit.”
The mixtape is 25 exhausting songs in all, including covers of Wings’ “Band on the Run” and Aretha Franklin’s “Daydreaming” that will have a certain demographic yell “get off my lawn.” Here’s to trying things, though.
“This is a piece of us, something we have held very close to our hearts this year. A diary of some sorts and a sonic experiment,” they say. “For ages we have placed the mixtape format on a pedestal, from the history of Frankie Knuckles and DJ Drama all the way down to the old cassettes we’d find in our garage that belonged to our parents in the ’90s. Making this was a fever dream and the most fun we’ve had in our studio to date.”
