In which we give a combined 10 minutes (or so) to songs and visuals from M.A.G.S., Melpo Mene and Steady Holiday …
M.A.G.S., “Beg”
Elliott Douglas, aka M.A.G.S., works through some issues — and his skateboard pays a heavy price — in the video for “Beg,” the new, explosive single from his forthcoming sophomore album, “Say Things That Matter,” out Aug. 13. “I wrote ‘Beg’ while I was in Buffalo visiting my family in January 2020,” Douglas says. “At this point in my life I was actively trying to change myself and face some of my demons. I could see the results of my efforts, but I was still healing from a few old wounds. I didn’t really know what was next, figuratively and literally with the pandemic about to kick in the door. … I love this song because every part is kind of its own thing, and they kinda shouldn’t work well together but somehow, they do. I wanted the dynamics of this song to be part of the narrative, with the bridge basically just being an explosion of rage and passion.” Mitch Dequilettes directs the video, set on the streets of L.A.
MELPO MENE, “Wrong at Last”
Model and environmental advocate Icelandic Selkie stars in director Logi Hilmarsson’s video for “Wrong at Last,” one of the many highlights on Melpo Mene’s first album in eight years, “Vernalagnia.” (The album was released on Earth Day, after all.) Just splendid.
STEADY HOLIDAY, “Sunny in the Making” (Japanese version)
Steady Holiday’s “Take the Corners Gently” is an album that keeps on giving, especially if you hit an emotional bump in the road as you emerge from the pandemic. That said, would you watch Dre Babisnki taking a bite of sandwich on a loop for 3 minutes? Well, why not? She’s recorded a Japanese version of the single “Sunny in the Making.” She says: “‘Sunny In The Making’ is a song about reckoning. About acknowledging where you’re at, and moving forward with confidence and humility. So it seemed fitting to have it be a canvas for a new adventure, like singing in a different language. With the help of a friend to translate and my stepmom as a dialect coach, this song is one of the ways I’m trying to put my own advice into practice.”
