Three albums and an EP into his journey as Gold Star, singer-songwriter Marlon Rabenreither wears his troubadour denim exceptionally well, crafting songs high in the mileage of the Everyman experience.

Gold Star this week announced the Sept. 3 arrival of a new EP, “Headlights USA,” five songs conceived during the pandemic. With the news comes the single “Surrender” and its no-frills video directed by Cameron McCool.

This release gets a co-sign from none other than Phoebe Bridgers, who name-checks, among other artists, Jackson Browne. Indeed, there might be a little “Running on Empty” in “Surrender,” a song that Gold Star says is inspired by the seedy drama of Denis Johnson short stories and hits the open road propelled by a steady drum machine.

It’s a strong recommendation to come count the cars with him on “Headlights USA.”
