■ The Hotel Cafe held its grand re-opening yesterday, with David Ryan Harris featuring on the main stage and program director Joel Eckels rechristening the Second Stage. Eckels has been among the heroic in the independent music scene over the last year and a half of the pandemic shutdown, with Hotel Cafe being among the first to bring local bands to an online performance platform via the Uncancelled Festival and Eckels continuing the Monday Monday singer-songwriter series on the Clubhouse app. In addition, he and his brothers have been performing regular live streams on Facebook.
On the anniversary of Bill Withers’ death from heart complications, Eckels played a set in tribute. “I had the extreme fortune of calling Bill a friend over the past 12 years,” said the singer-songwriter-engineer-event producer, “and had a number of unforgettable experiences with him, including having him mentor me and my band for a couple months back around 2009/2010. I miss his humor and wisdom so much. I’m always happy to honor Bill’s music and have done 3 full sets of his tunes on my live stream in the past year…. Hope you enjoy my tribute to Bill’s timeless music. All my love to the Withers family.”
■ Also, beaming in from London, Duran Duran performed their new single “Invisible” for the Today show yesterday morning (with Graham Coxon from Blur joining in on guitar). Singer-frontman Simon LeBon and drummer Roger Taylor were also interviewed by the show’s hosts about the AI visual generator Huxley and hopeful plans to tour the U.S. next year. Their new album (their 14th studio album), “Future Past,” will be released October 22.
